Laminate

Maximum style per dollar

Laminate pioneered the affordable wood look, and today's generation is better than its reputation: high-definition printing, deep embossed texture that follows the grain, and a wear layer so hard it out-scratches most real wood. For bedrooms, living rooms and whole-house makeovers on a budget, it remains unbeatable value.

Laminate is a photograph of wood fused onto a high-density fiberboard core under a tough melamine wear layer. That surface is its superpower — it shrugs off claws, heels and furniture better than most floors at any price. Modern 'water-resistant' laminates buy you hours against spills instead of minutes, though the fiberboard core still swells if water reaches it and, unlike wood, damage can't be sanded away.

Installation is where laminate shines for renovation timelines: it clicks together as a floating floor, often over existing surfaces, meaning most rooms are done in a day. Paired with a quality underlayment it also loses the hollow sound older laminate was known for.

Choose it when…

  • You're renovating on a firm budget without accepting a cheap look
  • Bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and home offices — dry, busy spaces
  • Scratch resistance is the top concern (large dogs, office chairs)
  • You need the whole project done fast — click-lock installs in a day

Think twice if…

  • The room sees real water — bathrooms and laundries call for LVP or tile
  • You want a floor that can be renewed rather than replaced

What we love

  • + Outstanding scratch and fade resistance
  • + Lowest installed cost of the wood looks
  • + Fast, clean, floating installation
  • + Realistic textures on current generations

Honest trade-offs

  • Core swells if water gets in
  • Cannot be refinished — damage is permanent
  • Harder, colder feel than vinyl or wood
