
Engineered Hardwood
Real wood on top, engineering underneath
Engineered hardwood is a layer of genuine wood bonded over a cross-laminated core. From above it *is* hardwood — same species, same grain, same feel — but the core makes it dramatically more stable, so it can go where solid wood can't.
The cross-grain core construction is the key: layers laid at 90° to each other cancel out wood's natural urge to expand and contract. That stability is what allows today's fashionable wide planks (7 inches and up) and installation directly over concrete slabs or radiant heating — both risky with solid wood.
Quality varies more than any other category, so the wear layer is what to watch: a 3mm+ veneer can be refinished once or twice, while paper-thin budget veneers cannot. We only install boards whose wear layer justifies the investment.

Think twice if…
- You expect to refinish many times over decades — solid hardwood is the better heirloom
- The space floods or stays wet — choose LVP or tile instead
